LANSING, Mich. – Today, Senate Minority Leader Jim Ananich (D-Flint) issued the following statement after voting no on the education omnibus bill (HB 5579):

“We can’t cut our way to better education, and that’s what this bill does. It punishes struggling schools by withholding some of their funds. This big brother mentality doesn’t do anything to help schools and hurts those that need a boost. My city has seen firsthand what the Lansing-knows-best approach does to a community, and children in Flint will be bearing the consequences of that for the rest of their lives.

“This is yet another missed opportunity. For all of this talk of providing our kids a world-class education and filling the skilled workers gap, this budget just doesn’t get us there. A better tomorrow starts with funding all public school classrooms, respecting teachers and equipping students with real-world skills.”
