LANSING, Mich., April 11, 2018 — Sen. Curtis Hertel Jr. (D–East Lansing) issued the following statement on his amendment requiring public universities to provide a written report of all Title IX complaints relating to cases of sexual misconduct to university presidents and board members:

“Ignorance cannot be an excuse for mishandling incidents of sexual assault. Survivors deserve to know their case is being taken seriously when they speak up. University presidents and boards have an obligation to know what is happening at their institutions, and a responsibility to act when presented with reports of sexual assault. This amendment holds universities accountable by eliminating plausible deniability and willful ignorance. To change our culture surrounding sexual assault, we must change how our institutions react and respond to reports on campus.”

The amendment comes on the heels of Michigan State University’s handling of the Larry Nassar scandal, and was added to the state Senate Higher Education subcommittee budget recommendation this morning, where it passed. It now heads to the full appropriations committee.
