LANSING, Mich. — Today, Minority Leader Senator Jim Ananich (D–Flint) announced Senator Curtis Hertel, Jr. (D–East Lansing) as the ranking Democrat on the Senate Appropriations Committee.

“Budgets are a reflection of priorities, and the voters clearly said they are ready to take our state in a new direction,” Sen. Hertel said. “We have seen what happens when the state budget fails to address the real issues affecting Michiganders. I am excited to roll up my sleeves and get to work to make sure Michigan’s budget works for our residents.”

The Senate Appropriations Committee is charged with crafting a balanced state budget each fiscal year and will be a key component in advancing a new agenda.

“Sen. Hertel is a dedicated fighter for the people of Michigan and I have every confidence that he is going to shape a budget that works for our state,” Sen. Ananich said. “The voters have given us a long to-do list for the upcoming Legislature, and Sen. Hertel is going to be a critical player in getting the job done.”

Hertel’s confirmation is pending approval from the Senate Majority Leader’s office.
