In celebration of March is Reading Month, Senator David Knezek (Dearborn Heights) will be visiting 11 schools across the 5th Senate district to read to students. Having previously worked in Michigan’s public schools, Senator Knezek is passionate about encouraging students to develop the reading comprehension skills they need to succeed both in and out of the classroom. In partnership with Delta Dental Michigan, Senator Knezek will also be distributing tooth brushes to every classroom he visits in order to promote healthy habits outside of the classroom.

“Reading to students for March is Reading Month is one of my favorite legislative responsibilities throughout the course of the year,” said Senator Knezek. “Promoting literacy and healthy living is just as rewarding for me as I hope it is for the students. I’m always impressed by the conversations that I get to have with them after we’re done reading – so many have a solid grasp on the challenges we’re facing in the state and across the country right now. It shouldn’t surprise anyone that their solutions are often times better than the ones our own government comes up with!”

This year, Senator Knezek will be reading the book House Mouse, Senate Mouse by Peter W. Barnes and Cheryl Shaw Barnes to the students he visits. Washington Parent Magazine recently called the book, “A fanciful way to expose children to the legislative process.” Amazon reviews the book as follows:

Congress is in session and the Squeaker of the House and the Senate Mouse-jority leader have a big job to do: they have to pass a law designating a national cheese for the United Mice of America. In House Mouse, Senate Mouse, bestselling and award-winning duo Peter and Cheryl Barnes give kids an entertaining and educational look at the legislative process while teaching them the values of hard work and compromise. From drawing up a bill and committee discussions to voting and signing a bill, House Mouse, Senate Mouse teaches children about the Senate, House of Representatives, and the Capitol building. House Mouse, Senate Mouse also features “The Tail End: Resources for Parents and Teachers” at the end of the book to help moms, dads, and educators teach their little mice even more about our legislative branch. Fun and informative, House Mouse, Senate Mouse is a great book for any child who might one day aspire to be a Congressmouse and work in our nation’s capital.

The dates, times, and locations of Senator Knezek’s visits are listed below. For more information or to schedule press accompaniment to any of the below listed schools, contact Chief of Staff Mike Malane at 517-373-0994 or mmalane@senate.michigan.gov.
