Bi-partisan legislation would establish annual holiday for “Blue Star Mothers”
LANSING – State Senator David Knezek (D-Dearborn Heights) and State Representative Julie Alexander (R-Hanover) introduced legislation yesterday to memorialize every February 1st as Blue Star Mothers Day in Michigan. The term “Blue Star Mother” refers to women who have children serving in the military, guard or reserves, or children who are veterans zuvrtrv.
“When I think about my own military service, it’s hard not to think about my mother and the sacrifices she made along the way,” said Knezek, a veteran of the United States Marine Corps who served two tours of duty in Iraq. “This bill is a way to recognize and honor the sacrifices made by all the women who powerfully impact the lives of our servicemen and women while they’re at home and especially abroad.”
The Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. was founded in Flint, Michigan, in 1942 and strives to assist military families in all aspects, most notably by welcoming home returning service members, visiting the wounded in hospitals and rehabilitation centers, and caring for the mothers and families of those who lost their lives while in service to our country. Blue Star Mothers are often easily identified by a blue star that rests on a white banner and is displayed at their home or on their lapel.
“I am so appreciative of the work that this group of mothers provides which promotes patriotism and support our troops and their families,” said Alexander, who is the mother to an active duty Marine. “Their hard work makes a difference and I’m humbled to have the opportunity to honor them for their selflessness.”
Senate Bill 90 and House Bill 4140 were introduced on Wednesday and referred to their respective committees for legislative consideration.
