Lansing – Senator Coleman A. Young II issued the following statement Wednesday after Governor Rick Snyder announced he would not appeal a federal court’s decision that the state must recognize the marriages of 300 same-sex couples who wed in Michigan nearly a year ago.

“Equality is the foundation of our democracy – all men are created equal. All families, all love, all marriages are equal, and deserve the same benefits and protections. For far too long, Michigan has lagged behind the rest of the nation and allowed our LGBTQ brothers and sisters to be treated as second-class citizens. I am glad that Governor Snyder listened to my fellow Democrats and me, and made the right decision. I hope he will continue to take a stand for equality.”
