Senate Minority Leader Jim Ananich on “Pistols in Preschools” Legislation

LANSING, Mich – Senate Minority Leader Jim Ananich (D-Flint) issued the following statement after bills to allow concealed carry in schools, hospitals, churches, arenas and bars passed out of the Senate:

“This doesn’t make any sense to me. As a former teacher, I know that crisis situations are best handled by school security or local police, not a vigilante ‘good guy with a gun.’ No matter the intention, we know that an increased amount of guns in schools will lead to a tense learning environment and a serious risk of accidental discharge.

“Think about it: teachers have enough on their plates already – the last thing they should have to worry about is a student getting ahold of a weapon or a stranger wandering through their building with a loaded gun. The same goes for doctors, nurses, arena staff and bartenders – people who work in high-stress environments and deserve to be able to do their jobs without fear that those around them are packing in secret. This is counterproductive to public safety and flies in the face of common sense.”
