LANSING, Mich. – Today, Senate Minority Leader Jim Ananich (D-Flint) issued the following statement after the Senate passed his legislation to end the ban on access to food assistance for those with more than one drug-related felony:
“Food assistance should be available to anyone struggling to put dinner on the table for their family, but right now that’s not the case for folks who have completed their sentences for drug charges. It’s particularly harsh to single out this group of people who are arguably some of the folks who could benefit the most from a little help with the grocery bill. Public programs are set in place to help people, not be a continuation of punishment, and I’m glad to see my bill to right this wrong move forward today.”
Senate Bill 1006 now moves to the House of Representatives for consideration.
