LANSING, Mich.\u00a0(March\u00a024,\u00a02026) \u2014\u00a0Today,\u00a0the Senate Housing and Human Services Committee\u00a0passed Senate Bills\u00a0<\/span>310<\/a><\/u><\/span>–313,<\/a><\/u><\/span> legislation\u00a0championed by Senate Democrats to address the\u00a0high\u00a0child care\u00a0costs\u00a0facing\u00a0Michigan\u00a0parents\u00a0and better support\u00a0child care\u00a0providers.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom\u00a0child care\u00a0to the grocery store, rising costs are making it increasingly challenging for families to make ends meet,\u201d\u00a0said Sen.\u00a0<\/span>Mallory\u00a0McMorrow<\/b>, sponsor of Senate Bill 310. \u201cAs a mom of a young daughter myself, I understand the stress parents feel in trying to balance work and caring for\u00a0your\u00a0little ones all while desperately searching for any time to take care of yourself.\u00a0That’s\u00a0why this bill package is so crucial. By reforming our systems to make it easier to start and raise a family need, we can help families worry less so they can focus on what matters most: spending time with their little ones.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen families are being forced out of the workforce due to the inaccessibility of\u00a0child care,\u00a0it’s\u00a0clear that\u00a0there’s\u00a0a crisis. The\u00a0child care\u00a0system needs reform now, before our people, our communities, and our economy suffer even more consequences,\u201d\u00a0said Sen.\u00a0<\/span>Rosemary Bayer<\/b>\u00a0(D-West Bloomfield), sponsor of Senate Bill 311. \u201cThis package tackles the crisis from both the demand and supply side, and it plans for our future; by tying the Child Care Reimbursement Rate to inflation, we provide certainty and consistency to providers going forward.\u201d<\/p>\n

The\u00a0bills\u00a0would make\u00a0child care\u00a0more affordable for families and more sustainable for\u00a0child care\u00a0professionals and entrepreneurs by:<\/p><\/div>\n

    Codifying the innovative bipartisan program, Tri-Share, that splits the cost of\u00a0child care\u00a0equally among employers, the state, and employees;<\/div>\n<\/li>\n

    Tying the Child Care Reimbursement Rate to inflation to provide certainty and consistency to providers; and<\/div>\n<\/li>\n
  • \n
    Updating licensing requirements for\u00a0child care\u00a0centers and removing burdensome barriers to opening and operating centers.<\/div>\n

    \u201cIncreasing avenues for child care\u00a0here in our state will alleviate concerns \u2014 and costs \u2014 for hardworking parents. Supporting\u00a0programming\u00a0that\u00a0ensures\u00a0the safety of our kids is a major win for Michigan families,\u201d said Sen.\u00a0<\/span>Sean<\/b>\u00a0McCann<\/b>\u00a0(D-Kalamazoo), sponsor of Senate Bill 312. \u201cChild\u00a0care\u00a0providers here in our state set children up for success so parents\u00a0can maintain\u00a0their careers and provide for their loved ones. I am thrilled to see this legislation take a step closer to the finish line.\u201d<\/p>\n

    \u201cThe astronomical cost of\u00a0child care,\u00a0coupled with the hoops and hurdles providers must jump through to stay open,\u00a0continues\u00a0to fuel a crisis that\u00a0impacts\u00a0our\u00a0families, workforce, and broader\u00a0state\u00a0economy,\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0Sen.\u00a0<\/span>Sarah Anthony\u00a0<\/span><\/b>(D-Lansing), sponsor of Senate\u00a0Bill 313.\u00a0\u201cBy cutting some of the costs and red tape\u00a0facing\u00a0providers, we can\u00a0start to address the\u00a0child care\u00a0deserts that exist throughout the state, especially in our rural communities.\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0happy to see this bill package advance in the\u00a0legislature and\u00a0am continuing to work on\u00a0additional\u00a0ways\u00a0my Senate colleagues and I can lower costs for Michigan families.\u201d<\/p>\n
