LANSING, Mich.\u00a0(July\u00a03,\u00a02026) \u2014\u00a0As\u00a0rising\u00a0everyday\u00a0costs and\u00a0short-sighted\u00a0federal actions\u00a0continue to cause strain and stress for residents across the state,\u00a0Senate Democrats passed\u00a0a bipartisan\u00a02027 state budget\u00a0today to deliver\u00a0much-needed\u00a0support\u00a0for\u00a0Michigan\u00a0families and communities.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile\u00a0DC politicians continue to\u00a0fuel\u00a0chaos and\u00a0uncertainty\u00a0across\u00a0our state, we\u2019ve come together across party lines\u00a0to deliver\u00a0a budget that Michiganders can count on: relief from rising costs, economic opportunity,\u00a0and peace of mind,\u201d said Sen. Sarah Anthony\u00a0<\/span><\/b>(D-Lansing), Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee. \u201cThis budget\u00a0focuses\u00a0on what matters most to\u00a0the people of Michigan, and the investments speak for themselves.\u00a0These are the types of\u00a0results\u00a0we can\u00a0accomplish\u00a0when\u00a0we craft a budget\u00a0centered in\u00a0empathy,\u00a0equity,\u00a0and dignity for\u00a0the Michiganders\u00a0we serve.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now on its way to the governor to be signed into law,\u00a0Senate Dems\u2019 final budget agreement\u00a0helps\u00a0meet the needs of\u00a0Michiganders\u00a0by:<\/p><\/div>\n

    Protecting vital services people rely on<\/b>, ensuring people\u00a0maintain\u00a0access to Medicaid\u00a0coverage and food benefits in the wake of changes from the federal\u00a0megabill.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n

    Continuing investments in popular\u00a0cost-cutting\u00a0programs<\/b>,\u00a0<\/b>including\u00a0the\u00a0free school meals program, tax credits for working families\u00a0and seniors,\u00a0free pre-K for all,\u00a0and\u00a0grants to ensure access to safe, affordable drinking water.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n

    Supporting\u00a0our workforce and local communities\u00a0<\/span><\/b>through the establishment of\u00a0a new\u00a0Childcare Fund\u00a0to\u00a0offer\u00a0stability for providers,\u00a0<\/b>wage increases for direct care workers,\u00a0resources for small\u00a0neighborhood businesses, and targeted\u00a0investments in\u00a0affordable housing\u00a0and home repair grants.<\/div>\n

    For the fourth year in a row, Senate Democrats\u2019 budget secures historic investments in education, including another record per-pupil increase and implementation of a new weighted funding formula to deliver support to schools with students who need it most. The final plan also continues allocations for school safety and mental health efforts, literacy supports, and new educator bonuses to help recruit and retain qualified teachers and staff. And to expand pathways to higher education, it continues funding for the Michigan Achievement Scholarship and Michigan Reconnect programs, helping more Michiganders gain the skills and training necessary to secure high-paying, in-demand jobs.<\/p>\n

    \u201cThis budget shows bipartisan progress is still possible,\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0Sen.\u00a0<\/span>Darrin Camilleri<\/b>\u00a0(D-Trenton), a former\u00a0educator\u00a0and current Chair of the PreK-12 Appropriations Subcommittee.\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m\u00a0proud of the funding priorities\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0carried through every one of our Senate Majority budgets, with record investments and better support for our students and teachers.\u00a0And after decades of disinvestment, and years of work to build them back up,\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0finally delivering predictable, long-term weighted funding\u00a0for our schools.\u201d<\/p>\n

    \u201cI am satisfied to know that with each of the four budgets during my tenure as majority leader, we have improved life for babies and seniors, working folks and retirees, and individuals, families, and whole communities,\u201d said Senate Majority Leader\u00a0<\/span>Winnie Brinks<\/b>\u00a0(D-Grand Rapids). \u201cAs we head into our country\u2019s 250th birthday celebration, we are setting an example for Washington D.C. of how to be better stewards of taxpayer dollars and how to put differences aside in the name of delivering results for our constituents.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Additionally, this budget\u00a0seeks\u00a0to keep Michiganders safe by securing\u00a0robust funding for\u00a0Community Violence Intervention grants,\u00a0natural disaster\u00a0emergency response,\u00a0relief for\u00a0prosecutor\u00a0caseload relief, and\u00a0by continuing revenue sharing to support local communities statewide.<\/p><\/div>\n
