LANSING, Mich.\u00a0(March\u00a010, 2026) \u2014\u00a0Today,\u00a0the Senate Housing and Human Services Committee, chaired by Sen.\u00a0Jeff Irwin <\/b>(D-Ann Arbor), held a hearing on\u00a0Senate Bills 310<\/a><\/u><\/span>–313,<\/a><\/u><\/span>\u00a0Senate Democrats\u2019 legislation to\u00a0cut\u00a0high\u00a0child care\u00a0costs\u00a0in\u00a0Michigan\u00a0and better serve\u00a0child care\u00a0providers.\u00a0<\/div>\n

\u201cThe rising costs of raising children\u00a0has\u00a0created an overwhelming burden on families,\u201d\u00a0said Sen. Mallory McMorrow <\/b>(D-Royal Oak), sponsor of Senate\u00a0Bill 310. \u201cAs the mom of a young daughter myself, I know what parents are going through \u2014 balancing it all with so much economic uncertainty \u2014 and we\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0have a minute to wait.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0time we build our societal infrastructure to lower costs for\u00a0families\u00a0so you can focus less on worrying and more on parenting. This legislation is about giving families the support you need by tackling your most urgent issues \u2014 shrinking budgets, lack of\u00a0child care, and rising rates of childhood poverty.\u201d\u00a0<\/div>\n

\u201cMichigan\u2019s\u00a0child care\u00a0crisis drains billions from our economy each year and forces families out of the workforce. It is pushing underpaid\u00a0child care\u00a0workers out of their jobs.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0clear that the system is broken from all angles, and it requires a comprehensive solution now, before even more families are faced with impossible decisions,\u201d\u00a0said Sen.
