Tuesday, October 1 marked the beginning of a new fiscal year in the state of Michigan — meaning the historic state budget passed by Senate Democrats on June 27, 2024, has officially taken effect!
Intentionally crafted to build up Michigan families, schools, workers, and local communities, this budget delivers on real issues impacting our residents. From continuing the universal free school meals program for all Michigan students and expanding access to higher education to investing in affordable housing and improving our infrastructure, Senate Democrats worked hard to negotiate and pass a state budget that benefits residents in every corner of our state.
“This budget is more than numbers on a page — it’s a strategic investment in our state, communities, and residents,” said Senate Appropriations Chairwoman Sarah Anthony (D-Lansing). “We’ve transformed once-in-a-generation investments into our annual priorities, creating a moral document that truly provides ongoing support for the people of Michigan and builds them up.”
Building on the historic investments made in education last year, Senate Democrats continued that momentum in the 2025 state budget, securing more funding to support Michigan’s students, teachers, and schools. Crafted by former educators with firsthand experience, this year’s school budget expands eligibility for free preschool, enables students to access higher education through the Community College Guarantee, and provides $600 million for classrooms — an average equivalent of approximately a $400 per-student increase statewide — among much more.
“Last year’s School Aid Budget was the most progressive education budget our state had ever seen, and this year, we’re continuing to build on our commitment to providing all Michigan students with an excellent education,” said Sen. Darrin Camilleri (D-Trenton), chair of the Senate Appropriations Pre-K-12 Subcommittee. “Our School Aid Budget puts educators and students first, it includes their input gained through dialogue, and it ultimately ensures all Michigan students have the support they need to learn and grow.”
Senate Democrats also negotiated the 2025 state budget to prioritize their local communities and ensure the needs and desires of their constituents are adequately met. Ranging from road safety improvements, support for local nonprofit organizations, and targeted housing investments, each Senator placed the hardworking residents of their districts first and foremost to address the unique needs of their own local communities.
