While Michigan farmers and families pay the price of the Trump administration’s soaring energy costs, Senate Republicans turn their backs

LANSING, Mich. (March 25, 2026) — Today, Michigan Senate Democrats passed Senate Resolution 104, calling on Washington Republicans to reverse the Trump administration’s actions that have led to surging energy costs across the state and nation. Every Senate Republican in the chamber voted no.

In a time of heightened economic instability, the Trump administration is making it even more difficult for Michiganders — particularly our farmers — to make ends meet. Reckless decisions out of Washington have contributed to the highest gas prices in Michigan since August of 2024, a 13% hike in national energy costs since the onset of the second Trump administration, and an over 30% rise in fertilizer costs since the end of February of this year.

“Our federal leaders must act now to bring down energy costs and end the war in Iran which has raised crude oil prices across the globe and thrown our economy into chaos, and we must hold them accountable,” said Sen. Darrin Camilleri (D-Trenton), sponsor of the resolution. “Unfortunately, Michigan Senate Republicans continue to cosign every single bad decision President Trump makes. Today, my colleagues across the aisle voted against efforts to lower gas and fertilizer prices, again showing they are more loyal to Trump than the drivers and farmers they serve.”

Through the passage of the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” the Trump administration has cancelled hundreds of renewable energy credits and programs intended to provide affordable, efficient energy to the American people, instead passing the costs off to billpayers. Trump’s Dept. of Energy has also repeatedly ordered West Michigan’s unreliable, pollutive J.H. Campbell coal plant to remain open well past its original May 2025 closure date despite costing ratepayers over $600,000 a day and over $135 million through December of last year. Furthermore, Trump’s war with Iran has indisputably caused a significant spike in fuel costs since the conflict began.

“When you go to fill up your car tonight, you have Donald Trump to thank for the shocking prices at the pump,” said Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks (D-Grand Rapids). “By marching into another country with no plan and no backing from Congress, he’s plopped us into yet another expensive conflict while the American people deal with the costs. Michigan families cannot afford this. Shame on Senate Republicans for not having the backbone to stand up for their constituents.”

Senate Resolution 104 urges Washington Republicans to pursue every available means to tackle skyrocketing energy prices, restore proven-effective renewable energy programs, and put the priorities of the American people — especially lowering costs — first and foremost. Michigan Senate Democrats will continue fighting to hold the Trump administration accountable and provide real financial relief for our communities. With its passage today, the resolution will now be sent to Congress and the White House.
