Gov. Gretchen Whitmer joined a number of West Michigan politicians Friday afternoon to break ground on the new $49 million Grand Rapids Home for Veterans.
The 128-bed residence, expected to open by the end of 2021, will sit adjacent to the existing veterans home at 3000 Monroe Ave. NE. It will replace its significantly older and larger, 355-bed predecessor at an undetermined time after it’s up and running.
Whitmer was joined at the groundbreaking by, among others, Grand Rapids Mayor Rosalynn Bliss, Kent County Board of Commissioners Chair Mandy Bolter, state Sen. Winnie Brinks, D-Grand Rapids and state Reps. Rachel Hood, D-Grand Rapids, Mark Huizenga, R-Walker, and Lynn Afendoulis, R-Grand Rapids Township.
