LANSING, Mich. (March 6, 2025) — Today, Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks (D-Grand Rapids) and Senate Appropriations Chair Sen. Sarah Anthony (D-Lansing) issued the following statements in reaction to House Republicans’ surprise faux budget bills that would gut essential services for the people of Michigan:

Leader Brinks

“Is Speaker Hall anticipating his own failure to get a budget done? We haven’t seen a government shutdown in a long time, and there’s no good reason why he should be predicting one now unless he wants it to happen. Not only is this an empty budget, it’s also straight out of the Trump playbook — create a problem and then try to paint yourself as a hero for fixing the crisis of your own making. He can keep trying to legislate via press release. However, in the upper chamber, we’ll keep doing the actual work of the people.”

Sen. Anthony

“Matt Hall’s latest stunt isn’t just reckless — it’s completely unworkable, ignoring the essential funding needed to keep critical services that Michiganders rely on daily from DHHS, EGLE, LEO, and other state departments running. The best way to avoid a government shutdown is to not manufacture one in the first place. Instead of demonstrating leadership and coming to the table ready to work for the people of Michigan, he’s prioritizing political games at the expense of everyday Michiganders.”
