Senate Resolution 92 calls on Congress to enhance accountability for violent and reckless immigration enforcement agencies

LANSING, Mich. (Jan. 29, 2026) — Today, Michigan Senate Democrats passed Senate Resolution 92 calling on Congress to restore and strengthen oversight and accountability mechanisms for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency and the Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS). The action follows a spike in unchecked and aggressive tactics by federal immigration enforcement officers in Minnesota and across the country over the past several weeks.

“We no longer see the checks and balances that American agencies were built around, and the result is clear: a lack of accountability means force can be used without full scrutiny, causing chaos, and as we’ve seen recently — costing lives,” said Sen. Sarah Anthony (D-Lansing), sponsor of today’s resolution. “Michiganders and Americans of all backgrounds and political beliefs disagree about a lot of things, but one thing we must all agree on is this: no one is above the law, especially those entrusted with enforcing it. For the sake of Michiganders, Minnesotans, and our fellow Americans around the country — the out-of-control tactics exercised by federal law enforcement officers and encouraged by our nation’s top officials has got to end.”

Over the last year, the Trump Administration’s ICE and U.S. Customs and Border Patrol Officers (CBP) have been operating without impunity and increased hostility. In Minnesota, where Trump’s immigration crackdown has taken center stage over the past month, thousands of armed and masked federal agents have been terrorizing children and families.

These agencies’ aggressive tactics include: carrying out militarized raids in people’s homes, schools, and hospitals; conducting illegal stops and arrests; targeting and harassing communities of color; and aggressively detaining whomever they want, no matter their citizenship status. As these agents abuse their power and rule of law, public safety is threatened, and lives even taken with the tragic fatal shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis by ICE and CBP agents earlier this month.

Michigan is not immune to the cruel, unjust consequences of Trump’s immigration crackdown. From federal immigration enforcement officers snatching parents from a school bus stop in Ypsilanti just yesterday to detaining a Detroit father on his way to work, the escalation in ICE activity over the past several months has stoked unimaginable fear, stress, and anxiety for families and across the state, even sending many into hiding as they navigate this new reality.

“What’s been playing out in Minneapolis — with cameras everywhere to prove it — is in direct violation of our core American truths and liberties. This systematic disregard for humanity and for law and order is anti-American, and it leaves us all vulnerable,” said Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks (D-Grand Rapids). “Folks from all over our state, including my district, have come together and used their voices to demonstrate solidarity with our immigrant neighbors and to call for an end to ICE’s brutality and corruption — and I’m so proud to represent a community where caring for one another is tangible, consistent, and courageous. We call on our nation’s leaders to demand greater oversight and accountability in ICE and DHS operations — because no one is above the law.”

As federal immigration enforcement officers operate with rogue authority and threaten the public safety of communities around the state and country, Senate Democrats will continue fighting to hold our administration accountable and demand a more just, safer future for all Michiganders, no matter their citizenship status.
