LANSING, Mich. – Senate Democrats announced their 2019-2020 leadership selections, which included the appointment of State Sen. Winnie Brinks (D–Grand Rapids) as Democratic Whip.
In response to the announcement, Sen. Brinks issued the following statement:
“I consider it a privilege to help lead a new team of legislators who are ready to roll up their sleeves and work hard to forge an even stronger Michigan for all of the hardworking families in our state. With an incoming Democratic governor and a returning Republican legislature, bi-partisan policymaking is crucial for our success moving forward.
“As they made clear in November, the people of Michigan are tired of politics as usual. I look forward to being part of a leadership team that brings people together. Michiganders are seeking solutions to everyday challenges like deteriorating roads and bridges, obtaining a good-paying job, and trusting the water that comes out of their taps. I am honored to have been recognized for my proven skills in working with all my colleagues and I look forward to serving in this role throughout the duration of the 100th Legislature.”
Brinks is starting her first term in the Michigan Senate after three terms of service in the Michigan House of Representatives. During that time, Senator Brinks served the House Democratic Caucus as Policy Chair for two terms and as Democratic Vice-Chair of the House Committee on Health Policy from 2017-2018.
