Kent County education leaders weigh in on state budget needs for classrooms, programming<\/span><\/i><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

KENTWOOD, Mich. (March 30, 2023) \u2014 Today, Senate Majority Leader\u00a0Winnie Brinks<\/b>\u00a0(D-Grand Rapids) and Assistant Majority Leader\u00a0Darrin Camilleri<\/b>\u00a0(D-Trenton) visited Brookwood Elementary\u00a0School\u00a0and held a roundtable discussion to seek input from students,\u00a0teachers\u00a0and\u00a0administrators about education funding needs for the area. They were joined by\u00a0Kevin Polston, Superintendent of Kentwood Public Schools, and Kentwood students, educators\u00a0and\u00a0administrators\u00a0to have a productive conversation about how the state can support school operations.<\/span><\/span>

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cKentwood educators and administrators have a lot to be proud of, and I thank them for welcoming us into their school\u00a0for a meaningful discussion about the state of education and where we must go from here,\u201d Sen.\u00a0Brinks<\/b>\u00a0said. \u201cFor too long, legislators have prescribed unwanted policies to teachers and schools to drive a certain political narrative. We\u2019re\u00a0telling teachers, support staff, administrators, students, and their parents that\u00a0their<\/i>\u00a0agenda is\u00a0our<\/i>\u00a0agenda, and we\u2019re\u00a0going to work hand-in-hand\u00a0to strengthen our public schools and set kids up for success.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

As chair of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on PreK-12 Education, Sen. Camilleri is conducting a statewide education tour in effort to collect insight from a range of Michigan educators and incorporate their feedback into the forthcoming state budget. The\u00a0tour began earlier this week in Dearborn<\/a>\u00a0and will also be making stops in Saginaw and Macomb County.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWhen it comes to the needs of Michigan students, we want to hear directly from the source, and that\u2019s why I\u2019m going directly to schools across our\u00a0state,\u201d said Sen.\u00a0Camilleri<\/b>. \u201cNeeds vary from community to community, and even from building to building, and we need a PreK-12 budget that empowers school districts to meet those needs. It\u2019s\u00a0honest conversations like the one we had today that shed light on what we\u2019re\u00a0doing right as a state and what we can be doing better to support our students and their goals.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

We appreciate today\u2019s student- and community-centered conversation to help inform school funding decisions.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
