(<\/span>May\u00a0<\/span><\/span>1<\/span>1<\/span>, 2023) \u2014\u00a0<\/span><\/span>T<\/span>oday, t<\/span>he\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Michigan\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Senate\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Democrats marked another major milestone in their new majority, passing a sound state budget full of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>transformative,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>innovative<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>equitable<\/span>\u00a0investments.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201c<\/span>As we have for the last five months, w<\/span>e are rising to the challenges facing our state\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and meeting this moment,<\/span>\u201d said Sen.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Sarah Anthony<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, Senate Appropriations\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Chair<\/span>\u00a0and lead architect of the Senate\u2019s budget.<\/span>\u00a0\u201cWith this budget, we are using our state\u2019s solid\u00a0<\/span><\/span>revenues<\/span>\u00a0to build a budget for the people, rejecting the status quo in favor of equity and innovation.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThis budget is more than a compilation of numbers on a page\u2014it\u2019s a representation of our commitment to addressing the real needs of the people of Michigan,\u201d Senate Majority Leader\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Winnie Brinks<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0(D-Grand Rapids) said. \u201cThese bills detail smart investments informed by thousands of conversations\u00a0<\/span><\/span>we\u2019ve<\/span>\u00a0had with constituents, small businesses, and community leaders. This budget is historic for all the right reasons, and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>I\u2019m<\/span>\u00a0proud of the work Democrats have done to prioritize those who have long been ignored or left behind.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Increase per-pupil funding to the highest level in history.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    <\/span><\/span>Make\u00a0<\/span><\/span>child care<\/span>\u00a0more accessible and affordable to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>assist<\/span>\u00a0working parents and improve development for kids around the state.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Address the needs of our veterans and public safety professionals.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Ensure our justice system is more efficient and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>equitable, and<\/span>\u00a0offer greater opportunities for justice-involved individuals while they are incarcerated and when they return to our communities.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n

    \u201cThe state budget is a\u00a0<\/span><\/span>values statement<\/span>\u00a0as well as a financial one, and our proposals bear that out,\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Anthony<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>added.<\/span>\u00a0\u201cThe Senate Democratic Majority will continue to put people at the forefront of all our budget and policy priorities, and we look forward to working with our House Democratic colleagues and Gov.     Chair\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Anthony<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>and Appropriations Subcommittee Chairs have been working\u00a0<\/span><\/span>for months to craft a well-rounded, thoughtful budget that\u00a0<\/span><\/span>benefits<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>all residents across\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the entire state<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>This has included official and i<\/span>nformal meetings\u00a0<\/span><\/span>impacted<\/span>\u00a0individuals and communities,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>stakeholders<\/span>\u00a0and their Republican colleagues<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>The proposed budget<\/span>\u00a0bill<\/span>s\u00a0<\/span><\/span>now head<\/span>\u00a0to the House for consideration and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>will continue to be negotiated with the House and governor\u2019s office to reach final funding decisions<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
