WOODHAVEN, Mich. (March 6, 2023) — In a historic move, Pre-K-12 Senate Appropriations Chair Darrin Camilleri (D-Trenton) announced that he will be holding two offsite budget hearings in schools in Southeast Michigan, the first of which will be held tonight from 5:30-7pm at Yake Elementary School in Woodhaven (16400 Carter Rd, Woodhaven, MI 48183).

“It’s important that we remember why we’re doing this, and I think holding these hearings at schools will really help put things into perspective,” said Sen. Camilleri, a former teacher. “I want to use these hearings as an opportunity not only to hear from the voices of experts, but also to lift up those of educators, of administrators, of parents- because those who are experiencing these issues firsthand know better than anyone how our system is working (or not working) and what needs to change.”

Tonight’s meeting will be on the subject of universal Pre-K and will feature testimony from Wayne RESA Superintendent Dr. Daveda Colbert; Wayne RESA’s Director of Early Childhood Services Dr. Sophia Lafayette-Lause; Woodhaven-Brownstown Superintendent Mark Greathead; Yake Elementary Principal Tim Podlewski; and Woodhaven-Brownstown Director of Special Services Matt Salah.

*** PLEASE NOTE: This hearing was scheduled to take place last week but was rescheduled to tonight due to weather conditions
