Hello neighbor,

We’ve been busy in Lansing fighting on behalf of working families across our community, and I wanted to take a moment to share with you an update on legislation we’re working on to move our state forward.

As the chair of the PreK-12 Appropriations subcommittee, I’ve been meeting with educators, administrators, students, and education experts, and was proud to unveil our historic education budget recommendation last week.

Among other items, the budget we’ve put forth increases per-pupil funding, fully funds special education programs, establishes universal school meals, and provides incentives to attract and retain excellent teachers for our kids.

I believe this generational investment in our schools will lay the foundation for a more equitable education system, and I look forward to continuing this work with my colleagues as we deliberate on budget decisions.

I’m also happy to share that my package of bills, Senate Bill 124 and SB 125, which would establish a permanent fund to build grade separation projects over our most problematic train crossings, passed unanimously out of the Senate Transportation Committee last week and will be brought to a vote on the Senate floor soon. I’m excited to continue the work we’ve started on fixing train problems across our communities, and our legislation would do just that.

Lastly, I will be holding another Coffee Hour with State Representative Reggie Miller. Details are below.

WHEN: Monday, May 15, 2023, from 10 – 11 am
WHERE: Belleville Area District Library, 167 4th St, Belleville, MI 48111

I would love to see you there and chat about how we can continue moving Western Wayne forward.

As always, my team and I are here to serve you and provide any assistance available. Feel free to reach out if we can be of any help, or if you have any questions or concerns.

In solidarity,

Darrin Camilleri
State Senator
