LANSING, Mich. (July 12<\/span>, 2023) \u2014\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Today<\/span>, Sen.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Darrin Camilleri<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0(D-Trenton)\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>issued<\/span><\/span>\u00a0the following statement after Gov.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Gretchen Whitmer\u2019s<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0executive order establishing the Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential, or MiLEAP.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe know that a high-quality public education doesn\u2019t start in kindergarten\u00a0\u2014<\/span>\u00a0it starts well before that,\u201d said Sen.\u00a0<\/span>Camilleri<\/b><\/span>, Chairman of the Senate Pre-K-12 Education Budget and a former teacher. \u201cI\u2019m encouraged by this strategic move as we take steps toward a universal Pre-K system in Michigan and make other improvements that will allow every child to reach their full potential and succeed in the future.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEvery Michigander deserves a path to \u2018make it in Michigan\u2019 with strong, lifelong learning support,\u201d said\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Gov. Whitmer<\/strong><\/span><\/span>. \u201cFor too long, we have thought of education as K-12, but we know that\u2019s not good enough. I\u2019m establishing MiLEAP today because we need to get every kid started early, in pre-K, so they succeed in kindergarten, have paths after graduation to get higher education tuition-free, and forge strong partnerships with our employers so they can get a good-paying, high-skill, and in-demand job. MiLEAP will help our learning ecosystem take the jump to the next level as we grow our economy and build a brighter future for Michigan.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
