Dear neighbor,

Thank you for signing up to receive my e-newsletter & Happy Black History Month! Since 1976, every United States President has recognized the month of February as Black History Month, an annual celebration of African American achievements and influential leaders in our history. We pay tribute to not only the many Black historical figures in our nation’s history, but also the hidden figures that have contributed to American ingenuity and innovation throughout the existence of this great nation, the celebration of which has evolved into a month-long celebration of Black progress and power.

I’ll be posting more Black History Month facts, legislative updates, community news, resources and more on my Instagram, feel free to follow me here:

As your newly elected State Senator, I am honored to serve the people of Northwest Detroit, Redford Twp., Livonia, Farmington, and Farmington Hills. I am very excited to start this new year and the new legislative session off strong!

Since the 102nd Michigan Legislature’s session began, my team and I have hit the ground running!

Alongside 6th District Precinct Delegates, I was sworn-in by Michigan Supreme Court Justice Kyra Harris Bolden in a district ceremony on January 15, 2023. It was a special moment to share my swearing-in with district activists, and I was proud to have family, friends, and strong community support there with me.

I am pleased to announce that I have been named Assistant Majority Whip for the 102nd Legislative Session and have been assigned to several key committees that will shape the policy and budget priorities of the people of Michigan.

I will be serving as Chair of the Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) / Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) Appropriations Subcommittee and the Licensing & Regulatory Affairs (LARA) / Department of Insurance & Financial Services (DIFS) Appropriations Subcommittee.

I will also be serving as Chair of the Finance, Insurance, and Consumer Protection Committee, as well as Vice Chair of the Economic and Community Development Committee. In addition, I will also serve on the following committees: Appropriations, Housing and Human Services, Labor, Department of Health and Human Services Appropriations, and Pre K-12 Appropriations.

Through my committees I have been working hard to advance important legislation, including bills to support affordable housing, protect workers, and improve access to healthcare.

On January 25, 2023, the Senate passed two momentous bills, Senate Bill 1 and Senate Bill 3, which will reduce taxes on working families and our hardworking seniors. SB 1, which passed out of my committee, will repeal the 2011 retirement tax for public and private retirees. SB 3 will increase the Earned Income Tax Credit from 6% to 30%.

These bills are a vital foundation to Governor Whitmer’s recently announced Lowering MI Cost plan. This plan will save Michigan households an average of $1,000 a year, put an average of $3,150 back into the pockets of working parents, and deliver inflation relief checks to all Michigan taxpayers.

This is just the beginning. I remain committed to working with my legislative colleagues to move Michigan forward and make a positive impact in the lives of the people I serve.
