LANSING, Mich. (Jan. 24, 2024) — Sen. Mary Cavanagh (D-Redford Twp.) has issued the following statement in response to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s State of the State speech on Wednesday evening, including her proposal to build 10,000 new housing units and continued economic investment:

“Affordable housing is a critical component to building thriving communities where both current and future residents can succeed. Through policy and pivotal budget investments in the past year, our Democratic trifecta has made expanding housing access and options for every Michigander a top priority, which will continue to be a major focus in 2024. As the Senate Chair of the Appropriations Subcommittee on LEO/MEDC, I applaud Gov. Whitmer’s efforts to address the housing crisis occurring in our state, and I am looking forward to continuing to work together to address this long-standing issue.

When we invest in our communities, Michigan thrives. By bridging our state resources and leveraging talent, we can foster economic opportunities that create transformational change across every region. I sponsored the High-wage Incentive for Regional Employment (HIRE) Michigan legislation to support investment in our communities that our workforce deserves, and I appreciate the governor’s support for this proposal tonight.”
