Dear Neighbor,
I go to work in Lansing every day with one thing on my mind — making life better for you! Though the Michigan Legislature is a divided government, I am still proud to deliver on important priorities for District 6, like:
- Housing
- Education
- Healthcare
- & More!
As always, our office is here to serve you. If you have questions about pending legislation, need assistance navigating a state department, or would like to share your thoughts, please feel free to reach out to our office by email at SenMCavanagh@senate.michigan.gov or by phone at (517) 373-7748.
In service,
Mary Cavanagh
Your State Senator
Taking on Medical Debt
Going to the doctor shouldn’t bankrupt you or your family. That’s why I was proud to advance legislation through my committee and vote to:
- Prohibit medical debt from showing up on your credit report and cap medical debt with a maximum interest rate of 3%
- Require hospitals to implement financial assistance programs
- Ban liens on your home based on medical debt
Cracking Down on Robocalls
In 2024, Michiganders received over 1 billion unsolicited automated calls and texts, often used as a scamming tool. My legislation unanimously passed in the Senate to hold bad actors accountable and protect consumers.
The Path Ahead
As we continue our work in the 103rd Legislature, I’m laser focused on delivering for you by working to:
- Tackle high auto insurance costs, ensure affordability, eliminate the zip code tax, and ensure claim transparency
- Invest in housing programs to lower costs, increase opportunities for home ownership, and offer rental relief
- Support our kids by investing in free school breakfast and lunch, universal Pre-K, before- and after-school programs, and Rx Kids
- Put people over profits by lowering utility costs, investing in community violence intervention, supporting small businesses, and requiring local developments to include community benefits
Fighting for Healthy Families and Babies
I was proud to help champion over $250 million in funding to support the expansion of the Rx Kids program to many new areas of Michigan, including Detroit! This groundbreaking, proven-effective program supports new families and babies by:
- Providing pregnant mothers with cash payments of $1,500 per month during pregnancy and $500 per month for the first six months of their child’s life
- Connecting new moms with a network of support and wraparound services
- Ensuring financial stability and security during the vulnerable periods of pregnancy and postpartum

Investing in our Communities
I’m honored to chair the subcommittee for the Budget on Labor and Economic Opportunity in the Senate, where I helped bring home over $100 million in investments in 2025, including:
- More than $48 million to support local small businesses and entrepreneurs
- $2.25 million for before- and after-school programs around our district
- $1.5 million for Detroit Right to Counsel, helping keep people in their homes
- $1.28 million for home repair grants, helping residents make needed fixes to their homes
- $1 million to support Focus HOPE’s programs
- $1 million to support the Michigan Black Business Alliance
- $1 million to expand Starfish Family Services Daycare into Brightmoor
- $750,000 to improve RedfordTownship’s clean water infrastructure
- $500,000 for accessibility improvements to the North Rosedale Park Community House
- $300,000 to support the Brightmoor Connections Food Pantry
