LANSING, Mich. — Today, incoming Senate Majority Whip Mallory McMorrow (D-Royal Oak) announced that Senator-elect Mary Cavanagh (D-Redford Township) will join her as Assistant Majority Whip beginning in January 2023.

“With a shift in power, it is more vital than ever to prioritize the needs and rights of Michiganders,” said Cavanagh. “I am excited to join Senator McMorrow and the leadership team in spearheading legislation that will serve the people and all of Michigan.”

“As Democrats head into the new term with control of the state Senate for the first time in nearly 40 years, we have a generational opportunity to prove to voters that we will be thoughtful, strategic, and able to deliver for every Michigander,” said McMorrow. “Senator-elect Cavanagh brings dedication, passion, and a driving desire to learn and build bridges that will be instrumental in working with me as Whip to ensure our caucus is aligned, that every member —and their constituents — is heard, and that we keep driving forward for the people of Michigan.”

“As the youngest Latina to be elected to serve in a leadership role in the Michigan Senate, I am determined to pave the way to not be the last,” Cavanagh added. “We are truly stronger together, and for the first time in Michigan’s history, leadership in Lansing finally reflects what makes Michigan so beautiful — the diversity within our state.”
