users\u00a0in the name of profit,\u00a0address\u00a0emerging risks associated with AI and social media usage,\u00a0and\u00a0empower Michigan parents with more autonomy and\u00a0transparency over their kids\u2019 digital activity.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">\u201cFrom helping block\u00a0overbearing\u00a0robocalls and spam texts\u00a0to\u00a0combating\u00a0ticket\u00a0bots, the\u00a0Senate Finance, Insurance, and Consumer Protection\u00a0Committee has made it a\u00a0priority to\u00a0adapt to changing technologies and\u00a0address\u00a0the new threats that come with them,\u201d said Sen.<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Mary Cavanagh<\/b>\u00a0(D-Redford Twp.),\u00a0chair of the\u00a0Senate Finance, Insurance, and Consumer Protection Committee. \u201cIt is especially important to stand up against\u00a0addictive\u00a0social media,\u00a0data privacy,\u00a0human-like\u00a0AI\u00a0bots, and other would prohibit social media platforms from providing addictive, personal data-driven feeds to minors unless parental consent is given;\u00a0<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\" role=\"presentation\"><b>SBs 758<\/b>\u00a0(Hertel) and<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>759<\/b>\u00a0(Sen.<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Stephanie Chang<\/b>\u00a0[D-Detroit]),\u00a0the Kids Code Act, would mandate stricter data privacy and safety settings for minors on digital platforms while also giving parents more control over their children\u2019s online accounts.\u00a0<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\" role=\"presentation\"><b>SB 760<\/b>\u00a0(Polehanki), the Leading Ethical AI Development (LEAD) for Kids Act,\u00a0would ensure that dangerous AI companion chatbots are inaccessible to children, including those that have the capability to encourage self-harming behaviors, illegal activities, sexually explicit interactions, etc.\u00a0<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">\u201cFor far too long, big tech has\u00a0profited off of\u00a0our children and exposed them to harmful content. Their privacy, safety, and well-being have not been a priority of these social media platforms, and today is the first step in holding them accountable and putting our kids first,\u201d said Sen.<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Camilleri<\/b>,\u00a0a former teacher.\u00a0\u201cThis is a common-sense change that would help both kids and parents alike, and\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0already seen states like California and New York take steps to address these concerns.\u201d\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">\u201cParents across Michigan are facing the dilemma of if and when to introduce technology and social media into their children\u2019s lives, and it\u2019s made all the more difficult by Big Tech companies putting their own profit margin ahead of our kids\u2019 well-being,\u201d said\u00a0Sen.<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Hertel<\/b>. \u201cThat\u2019s\u00a0why our Kids Over Clicks package is so critical. At its core, these bills are about building the kind of world we want for our kids: a world where\u00a0they&#8217;re\u00a0more focused on passing their math test than counting how many likes their social media post has. A world where\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0excited about seeing their friends at soccer practice, not through a screen.\u201d\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">\u201cWhen\u00a0new technologies\u00a0enter our lives, especially technologies that interact directly with young people, there is a basic expectation that safety will come first.
