In her dissenting opinion in Louisiana v. Callais, Justice Kagan said:
"The Voting Rights Act is - or now more accurately, was - 'one of the most consequential, efficacious, and amply justified exercises of federal legislative power in our Nation's history’. It was born of the literal blood of Union soldier and civil rights marchers. It ushered in awe-inspiring change, bringing this Nation closer to fulfilling the ideals of democracy and racial equality. And it has been repeatedly, and overwhelmingly, reauthorized by the people's representatives in Congress. ....
"I dissent because the Court betrays its duty to faithfully implement the great statute Congress wrote. I dissent because the Court's decision will set back the foundational right Congress granted of racial equality in electoral opportunity."
In Michigan and across the country, it is critical now more than ever that state legislatures take action to ensure that voices of voters of color and all voters are heard in our democracy.
Now is the time to fight back, to organize, and to protect.
I am proud to join Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, Senator Darrin Camilleri, Office of State Senator Jeremy Moss, State Senator Erika Geiss and our incredible partners in the State House led by State Representative Jason Hoskins on the Michigan Voting Rights Act.
My bill in particular will strengthen language access provisions so that eligible Michigan voters who are English Language Learners can accurately cast their ballots and participate more fully in our democracy. #mileg #votingrights ... See MoreSee Less
