I recently spent two days in Minneapolis/St. Paul with New American Leaders and other elected and appointed officials from around the country, to learn about Operation Metro Surge and the incredible local organizing and policy efforts to respond to the largest immigration enforcement action this country has seen.
We met with Somali community organizers, New American local elected officials, state legislators, and law enforcement leaders. We visited the memorial sites for Renee Good, Alex Pretti, and George Floyd. We ended with a conversation with Attorney General Keith Ellison and Congresswoman Ilhan Omar. [We also ate a ton of amazing food.]
I'm still processing this powerful trip, but one of the main takeaways is that the way resilient and creative Minnesotans show up for one another and care for community is truly inspiring. The murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police and subsequent organizing for racial justice called us across the country and world to push for change, and the justice and dignity Minnesotans know their immigrant and refugee neighbors deserve must move us all toward lasting change as well.
The impacts of the 4000+ immigration arrests will continue to be felt by the community -- in addition to the families who have lost their loved ones to deportation, there are also many students unaccounted for in schools, more housing insecurity, more food insecurity, closed or struggling small businesses due to workers or customers unable to leave their homes during Metro Surge, local governments who struggled to pay police overtime during Metro Surge.
In Michigan, we thankfully have not seen the same kind of giant surge that some other states have, but we know ICE and CBP are actively detaining people regularly here and the number of deportations and people in detention is astounding. Issues continue at the North Lake Processing Center. People legally seeking asylum continue to be detained. I will continue to work with partners and colleagues to push for policy solutions and support impacted residents. The strength of our immigrant communities will keep us moving forward. ... This is the third death in less than one month at Women's Huron Valley Correctional Facility. It is incredibly shocking and concerning that women at Huron Valley have been dying unexpected deaths so frequently recently. I am in communication with the Michigan Department of Corrections about this incident and will continue to ask for answers.
As the investigations of all three deaths take place, we should consider further oversight mechanisms, ensure that proper medical care is being provided, and provide opportunities for women inside who pose no or very low risk to the community to be given a second chance.
I look forward to visiting Women's Huron Valley again very soon and will continue to be in touch with advocates and colleagues.
