It also requires the agents to wear\u00a0body-worn\u00a0cameras. Senate Resolution 86, which I sponsored,\u00a0urges the U.S. Congress to pass federal legislation\u00a0regarding\u00a0protected areas and unmasking ICE agents.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">For the past few months, we have heard from educators, law enforcement leaders, the medical community, domestic violence shelters, faith leaders, immigrants and their family members, and many others that overzealous unchecked ICE agents cause fear and anxiety and can make our communities less safe.\u00a0The mass detention and deportation effort has been ripping hardworking community members from our neighborhoods, and the vast majority of those in detention have no criminal background whatsoever.\u00a0Last month,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclumich.org\/press-releases\/new-poll-shows-majority-of-michiganders-support-statewide-legislation-that-reins-in-ice-and-protects-communities-from-federal-immigration-enforcement\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">polling released by the ACLU<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0showed that Michiganders support these\u00a0commonsense\u00a0guardrails.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Senate Passes Bipartisan Legislation to Tackle Medical Debt Facing Michiganders\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Medical debt is a burden that can follow someone around for the rest of their lives \u2014 hurting their ability to buy a home, forcing them to forgo essential expenses like groceries and rent, and oftentimes trapping them in a cycle of poverty that is nearly impossible to get out of. To provide support and safeguards for those struggling with medical expenses, the legislation would\u00a0establish\u00a0clear guidelines for hospitals to offer financial\u00a0assistance\u00a0programs and regulate how and when debt can be collected, such as by capping interest and late fees at 3% annually after a 90-day grace period. I was proud to vote yes on this legislation. Schools, criminal justice stakeholders, mental health organizations, and nonprofits around the state rely on the work social workers do\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">every day.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Michigan Health Council estimated that for the state to\u00a0address\u00a0that demand,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/michigan-health-watch\/michigan-mental-health-crisis-tug-war-over-too-few-social-workers\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">we must add more than 41,000 to the licensure roll by 2032<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0As we see an increase in demand for services that are provided by social workers, we must work to meet the demand while\u00a0maintaining\u00a0standards to ensure the quality of services is not compromised. That is why Sen.\u00a0Bayer and I introduced two bills that would help Michigan meet its demand for social workers.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Currently, under\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Laws\/MCL?objectName=mcl-368-1978-15-185.\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Michigan law<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ars.apps.lara.state.mi.us\/AdminCode\/DeptBureauAdminCode?Department=Licensing%20and%20Regulatory%20Affairs&amp;Bureau=Bureau%20of%20Professional%20Licensing\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">regulations<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, all applicants must complete 4,000 supervised hours in the field of social work and pass the examination chosen by the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/lara\/bureau-list\/bpl\/health\/hp-lic-health-prof\/social#Board_Information\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Michigan Board of Social Workers<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0The test that is being used, however, has been an obstacle for many who have chosen this profession that our state is in desperate need for.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aswb.org\/exam\/exam-scoring\/exam-pass-rates\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Michigan&#8217;s passing rate during 2024 was 57% for Bachelors and 44.9% for Clinical<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">. When looking further into these\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasw-michigan.org\/news\/670280\/Its-Time-To-Talk-About-Licensure---What-Do-We-Know-and-What-Do-We-Do-Next.htm\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">passing rates in the past decade<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">during 2011-2021,\u00a0White test takers had a 73.4% first timer pass rate compared to 28.2% for Black test takers, 52.8% for Hispanic\/Latino test takers,\u00a0and 57.1% for\u00a0Native American\/Indigenous peoples<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0These rates do not change much during retesting.
