Unable to say no, mandatory overtime\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0only grueling for nurses, contributing to high burnout rates, but also poses risks to patients and the care they are provided. To improve working conditions for our nurses and protect Michiganders seeking care, the Michigan Senate passed\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2025-SB-0296\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Senate Bills 296<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2025-SB-0297\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">297\u00a0<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">this past week, my bipartisan legislation with Sen.\u00a0Ed McBroom. These bills set safe limits on working hours and ensure that nurses who work overtime are offered at least 8 hours off after a\u00a012-hour\u00a0shift, unless\u00a0a nurse voluntarily waives this time.\u00a0Additional\u00a0safeguards would be implemented to protect nurses who refuse overtime from being fired. These measures will help our state\u00a0retain\u00a0its nursing workforce while protecting patients.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">I am proud to have worked on this bill for several years. Forcing nurses to continue providing critical care for hours on end \u2014 while exhausted and sleep deprived \u2014 is unsafe for patients and worsens our nursing shortage. Our hardworking nurses are crucial to\u00a0keeping\u00a0Michiganders\u00a0safe and healthy, and guardrails to protect them from grueling required overtime are long overdue. I am excited that the Senate took bipartisan action this week to advance real solutions for the safety of nurses and patients.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Updating Michigan\u2019s Wrongful Imprisonment Compensation Act\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">When someone is exonerated, ensuring that they receive financial support is critical for their success\u00a0upon\u00a0reentering the community. In 2016,\u00a0I helped shape and pass\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/(S(lf0neh3ltdxrzvimdch22om4))\/documents\/mcl\/pdf\/mcl-Act-343-of-2016.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Michigan\u2019s Wrongful Imprisonment Compensation Act (WICA)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">. WICA has been successful and\u00a0supported\u00a0many exonerees in Michigan who were wrongfully convicted and spent years in prison for crimes they did not commit.\u00a0Since taking effect, there\u00a0have been cases that have led the Michigan Supreme Court to articulate that several parts of WICA deserved a second look for clarification. This week, I introduced\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2024-SB-0909\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Senate Bill\u00a0909<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, which will make WICA compensation available for those pardoned for a crime based on their innocence, those who were exonerated with new evidence but exonerated because of another\u00a0issue, and\u00a0change the standard of proof to\u00a0align\u00a0with what most states do.
