The group was originally founded in Flint in 1942, provides support  and advocacy for veterans and their families in Michigan and across U.S.

LANSING, Mich. (June 8, 2023) – Yesterday, Sen. John Cherry (D-Flint) and the Michigan Senate unanimously passed Senate Bill 235, a bipartisan bill to establish February 1 as Blue Star Mothers Day in Michigan. It would permanently designate a day each year to honor mothers, stepmothers, grandmothers, foster mothers and female legal guardians who have children serving in the U.S. military (guard and reserves) or children who are veterans.

The bill is cosponsored by Sen. Cherry, and now moves to the Michigan House of Representatives for consideration.

The concept of Blue Star Mothers began in Flint and is another point of pride for our city and it’s great history,” said Sen. Cherry. “I continue to be grateful for the service of our military men and women, and appreciate the sacrifices their families make. Blue Star Mothers Day would rightfully recognize these individual parents, as well as the organization as a whole, and all they continue to do in Genesee County and around the state.”

The Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. was originally founded in Michigan in 1942, following the attack on Pearl Harbor in which Flint-native Jack Pitcher died aboard the USS West Virginia. The organization was formally chartered by Congress in 1960 during the Vietnam War.

Since the early days, members have assembled care packages to ship overseas, hosted events or fundraisers at home, participated in funeral or memorial ceremonies when called upon and volunteer for myriad veterans’ programs to offer support and advocacy wherever possible.
