Dear Friends,
It’s hard to believe we’re already a month into 2025! The new year is off to a productive start as I’ve been busy introducing legislation and preparing to get to work on the budget. As always, I remain committed to addressing the concerns of our district and ensuring your voices are heard in Lansing.
February also marks the start of Black History Month, a time to reflect on the invaluable contributions of Black Americans to our nation’s history, culture, and progress. It’s an opportunity to honor the legacies of those who have paved the way for justice and equality while recognizing the work still ahead.
I hope you’re staying warm during this winter season, and I encourage you to reach out if you have any feedback about what’s happening in Lansing or if you need assistance. You can contact me at 517-373-0142 for the Lansing office, 810-233-9853 for the district office, or via email at SenJCherry@senate.michigan.gov.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your State Senator.
Working for you,

John Cherry
State Senator
District 27

- With the first month of the new year officially behind us, my colleagues and I have pushed forward several priorities on behalf of our constituents, from voting in support of more government transparency to reintroducing legislation that would improve Michigan’s maternal health care system.
- Participate in the Black History Month panel organized by the Flint & Genesee Young Professionals. This event is taking place on Wednesday, Feb. 5th, 2025, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. at 1026 E. Kearsley St., Flint, MI 48503.

Legislative Action by the Senate
I’m proud to have led the charge in the Senate to ensure new state officers can join the Michigan State Police hybrid retirement system, while giving current officers the option to opt in.
But these critical House Bills from last term — House Bills 4665–4667 — and eight others are stuck, held up in the House. That’s why I co-sponsored Senate Resolution No. 3 to demand action and ensure these bills reach the Governor’s desk. We can’t let dysfunction stand in the way of doing what’s right; it’s time to deliver for Michigan.
Supporting Affordable Vehicle Repairs for Michiganders
As high interest rates and record prices drive more Michiganders to repair their vehicles instead of purchasing new ones, I’ve introduced Senate Bill 25 to reduce government burdens on repair facilities. By helping these businesses control their costs, this legislation aims to increase service availability for drivers across Michigan while maintaining the high standards needed for all types of repairs — including those for electric vehicles.

EITC: Lowering Costs for Michiganders for 50 Years
For 50 years now, the federal Earned Income Tax Credit has been instrumental in lifting families and workers out of poverty, reducing racial disparities, and providing critical support to small businesses and local economies.
Especially at a time when so many Michiganders are facing challenges affording the essentials, from gas to groceries, I’m proud to have worked with my Senate Democratic colleagues to pass policy that helps offset these prices and even allow some folks to save or pay off debts. I’m referring to when we quintupled Michigan’s match of the federal EITC from 6% to 30%, securing the largest increase to the credit in state history.
This game-changing expansion helps 700,000 Michiganders struggling to make ends meet save an average of $750 more per year, resulting in $3,150 in total savings with the federal and state EITCs combined. Here in District 27, over 26,400 families benefit, boosting incomes of working folks from $167 to over $800 on average. Our small businesses reap the benefits too, with over $20 million now being returned to our local economy.
But — Michiganders must make sure to claim the credit if they are eligible! To determine eligibility and find tax preparation resources, click here.
