Dear Neighbor,

As your State Senator, it has been a true honor to serve you and all District 27 residents at the Capitol, where I have been working hard alongside my colleagues to deliver solutions to the pressing issues Michiganders are facing. As we prepare for another productive legislative session, I want to take a moment and reflect on some of the hard work and wins we’ve accomplished during 2024. Read on to learn more about my legislative priorities to uplift Michigan workers, children, law enforcement professionals, and more.

As always, if you have any feedback about what’s happening in Lansing or need any assistance, please feel free to contact my office. I look forward to continuing to serve you in 2025!

Sincerely,

John Cherry
State Senator
District 27

RETIREMENT BENEFITS RESTORATION FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT PROFESSIONALS Senate Bills 165-167

These bills provide a new pension retirement benefit for corrections, conservation, and state police motor carrier officers, honoring the dedication and sacrifice they display daily to protect Michiganders.

PREVAILING WAGE REQUIREMENTS FOR RENEWABLE ENERGY PROJECTS Senate Bill 571

Now law, this bill ensures that the laborers working to bring Michigan’s energy infrastructure into a green 21st century earn a fair wage for their work.

FIXING OUR UNEMPLOYMENT SYSTEM Senate Bills 40, 962, 975, & 981

Unemployment benefits in Michigan are a vital resource for employees in moments of financial uncertainty. My legislation makes much-needed changes to modernize the unemployment process and remove barriers for employees. This legislation restores the maximum number of benefit weeks and, for the first time since the early 2000s, increases the weekly benefit amount Michiganders may receive.

THE FIGHT CONTINUES MOBILE HOME PARK REFORM PACKAGE Senate Bills 486-490

This package establishes new safeguards for the licensure of mobile home parks, requiring park owners to maintain standard health and safety protocols while protecting residents from predatory business practices.

VIDEO-RECORDED STATEMENTS FOR MINOR VICTIMS OF VIOLENCE & ABUSE Senate Bill 813

Child abuse cases take an unimaginable toll on victims and their families, and the court process often forces them to relive their pain time and again. My bill helps spare them additional and unnecessary trauma by allowing a victim’s video-recorded statement to be used more frequently in court.

WORKERS’ COMPENSATION REFORM Senate Bills 1079-1080
Since 2011, injured workers in Michigan have been short-changed. These bills ensure that their benefits are not arbitrarily reduced and, in the worst-case scenarios of death, that the dependents of a worker receive support to keep food on the table.

Around the Communtiy with Cherry

Throughout last year, I have had the incredible opportunity to engage with constituents across District 27 at various events, including coffee hours, town halls, ribbon-cutting ceremonies, and community gatherings. These interactions have not only allowed me to connect with residents but have also deepened my understanding of the unique needs and aspirations of our diverse community. Please let me know how I can better support you and your needs in the coming year. Together, we can work toward building an even stronger District 27!

In partnership with health advocates and medical experts, my office hosted a town hall at Carman-Ainsworth High School to discuss state and local responses to the increasing use of e-cigarettes among youth in Genesee County.

I was honored to be a guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Flint’s annual legislators meeting. I am pictured here alongside past president Ann Marie Van Duyne.

During March is Reading Month, I was excited to visit with students throughout the district, including those at Elms Elementary and Woodland Park.
