LANSING, Mich. (July 16, 2025) — In response to today’s announcement that the Sandisk Corporation has scrapped their plans to use the Mundy Township megasite for a massive semiconductor project — citing “massive uncertainty” at the federal level — Sen. John Cherry (D-Flint) issued the following statement:

“The decision to shelve Project Grit in Mundy Township is deeply disappointing for our community and the entire state. This project represented a generational opportunity to restore Genesee County’s legacy as a manufacturing powerhouse and to position Mid-Michigan at the forefront of the global semiconductor industry.

“Unfortunately, the company has cited economic uncertainty — driven in large part by the Trump administration’s chaotic tariff policies — as a key factor in its decision to pause the project for the foreseeable future. These policies have disrupted supply chains and created instability in the investment climate, making it difficult for even the most promising projects to move forward.

“While this pause is a setback, it does not erase the progress we’ve made or the potential that still exists within the Advanced Manufacturing District of Genesee County. We remain committed to attracting transformative investments, supporting skilled trades and technical careers, and ensuring that Genesee County remains a competitive and compelling destination for advanced manufacturing.

“We will continue working with our partners at every level to advocate for policies that support economic growth and to ensure that, when the time is right, projects like this can be revived and realized.”
