Dear Neighbor,

As your state Senator, fellow Flint resident, and proud father, I care deeply about the young people in our community and have been working hard to ensure they have every tool and opportunity available to build a bright and thriving future.

Whether they have dreams to cure or create, read on to learn about some of the game-changing resources I’ve helped secure for our kids and classrooms, understanding that an investment in our youth is an investment in Flint’s future. And, I’m excited to say — the future is bright.

Senator John Cherry’s 2025 Budget Wins for Kids

Investing in Our Students

My Senate colleagues and I passed a bold 2025 state budget last year, securing transformative investments for students, schools, and staff all across Michigan. Along with raising per-pupil funding statewide and reimbursing schools for some of their payroll costs, we also:

Along with these statewide investments, I was proud to champion specific resources in recent state budgets to:

  • Help Beecher Community Schools build their new high school;
  • Break ground on the new bilingual early education center at the Latinx Technology & Community Center, expanding opportunities for young bilingual learners in east Flint to access high-quality education in both English and Spanish as soon as next year;
  • Strengthen programming at the Flint Center for Educational Excellence, which seeks to improve education outcomes for Flint kids through afterschool activities, parent engagement, robust research, and more;
  • Build a new dormitory at the Michigan School for the Deaf, allowing more Deaf and hard of hearing students to stay on-campus throughout their academic experience; and
  • Safeguard student health and wellbeing by supporting school nurses, classroom aides, social workers, and community health workers to offer students behavioral and mental health support.

New High School coming to Flint

Senator Cherry Secures $35.9 Million

In case you haven’t yet heard, Flint will soon be home to a new state-of-the-art high school! Slated for construction at the former site of the Central High School campus, I’m ecstatic about this new opportunity for our young scholars to access a top-notch education in a modern space that will foster creativity, excellence, and a sense of community pride.

I fought hard to bring this project to reality. Flint Community Schools was one of three districts in the state chosen by the Michigan Dept. of Education for a school infrastructure grant — funds I’m proud to have helped secure in the state budget.
