Dear Neighbor,
Happy New Year! As your State Senator, I am looking forward to continuing to serve you and our community at the Capitol, where I am working hard to address the challenges Michiganders are facing both in our backyard and around the state.
While lots of exciting work is already underway for theyear, I wanted to take a moment and reflect on some of the important progress made and victories won in 2025 — all while navigating some pretty unprecedented times. From protecting access to health care and securing record investments for our students, to advancing commonsense legislation to make life more affordable, my colleagues and I fought for you every step of the way. And we will continue to do so in 2026.
If you ever have any questions about the work we’re doing, want to share concerns, or need assistance in navigating a state department, please don’t hesitate to reach out to my office. We’re here to help.
Sincerely,
John Cherry
STATE SENATOR, DISTRICT 27

A Budget that Puts You First
Setting Students Up for Success
Every kid deserves access to free breakfast and lunch at school, full stop. We secured the funding to continue the wildly popular universal free school meals program for every Michigan student while also expanding access to before- school, after-school, and summer learning programs statewide.
Protecting Medicaid
While the current federal administration works to throw hundreds of thousands of Michiganders off their insurance, our state budget saves Medicaid from devastating cuts to ensure health care remains accessible and affordable.
Boosting Access to Nutritious Food
Our budget continues delivering critical resources for the Double Up Food Bucks Program, enabling them to expand during the federal shutdown to help Michiganders access more fruits and vegetables at a challenging time.
Supporting New Moms & Babies
Our budget expands Rx Kids, the nation’s first community-wide prenatal and infant cash prescription program. Proven to boost health outcomes for moms and babies, we dedicated dollars for this game-changing program to reach nearly 100,000 newborns over the next three years.
