Local recipients of American Association of University Women Wyandotte-Downriver Branch scholarships for 2019 were provided with a special opportunity to meet U.S. Representative Debbie Dingell and State Senator Erika Geiss at the combined 28th AAUW Woman of the Year recognition and scholarship presentations celebration on May 14 at the Wayne County Community College District Downriver campus in Taylor.
Hector opened the scholarship portion of the evening by introducing two college women who were presented with free tuition and transportation from Dearborn to the University of Maryland to attend the AAUW National Conference for College Women Student Leaders. They included Hanna Swanson, resident of Riverview, who studies social work at the University of Toledo, with a goal of pursuing criminal justice, and Phoebe Varney, from Lambertville, who majors in psychology at Albion College, with a goal of becoming a pediatric psychologist. A third NCCWSL scholarship was awarded to Alexandra Andrews from Plymouth, who attends the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, pursuing political science. These awards totaled over $2,000.
The AAUW Wyandotte-Downriver Foundation also split $10,000 among five additional college women who were acknowledged for their distinguished academic records and involvement with women- related issues.
The AAUW Woman of the Year award is presented to a person whose contribution of time, effort and passion strengthens, supports or makes a significant difference in our community and the lives of others. This portion of the evening commenced with the introduction of State Senator, Wyandotte-Downriver Branch member and 2018 Woman of the Year, Erika Geiss. She joined Blair to recognize Debbie Dingell, in acknowledgement and gratitude for her years of public service in support of the interests of Michigan communities and for her constant advocacy for women and children nationwide.
