LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

Senate Bill 225: Sexual Assault Prevention Package

In the wake of the 2018 Nassar Sexual Assault investigation, a bipartisan group of House of Representatives members introduced a five-bill package to ensure this does not happen again.

Earlier this month, Senator Stephanie Chang, Senator Lana Theis, Senator Dan Lauwers, Senator Ruth Johnson, and I reintroduced these bills to continue the fight against sexual assault. It is crucial that we fight for those who have become victims and survivors of sexual assault and ensure that those who commit these crimes are held accountable.

My bill, Senate Bill 225, modifies sentencing guidelines for sexual contact or penetration under the pretext of medical treatment to establish a Class C felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison. All five bills in this package were referred to the Senate Committee on Judiciary and Public Safety.

Senate Bill 200: Pausing state mandated standardized testing

On March 2nd, Senator Dayna Polehanki, Senator Curtis Hertel Jr., Senator Paul Wojno, and I, introduced a package of bills that would pause the use of standardized tests for the 2020-2021 school year.

Michigan students have already faced a demanding and exhausting school year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and their grades should not suffer for circumstances outside of their control; the same should be said for teachers and administrators who are evaluated on the progress of their students’ education.

My bill, Senate Bill 200, would pause the state mandate that districts evaluate administrators using student growth data for the 2020-2021 school year. All four bills in this package were referred to the Senate Committee on Education and Career Readiness.
