LANSING, Mich. (July 18, 2023) — Today, Sen. Erika Geiss (D-Taylor) issued the following statement after the Board of Zoning Appeals, BZA, upheld the City of Detroit’s Building, Safety Engineering, and Environmental Department’s denial of the CamAm International Trade Crossing’s concrete crusher permit.

“As the State Senator representing the Core City community, I am ecstatic to have witnessed another big win for the residents of Core City at the BZA meeting. The CanAm concrete crusher has no place near homes, businesses, and schools in Core City,” said Sen. GeissThe proposed project by CanAm is nothing short of environmental racism, economic discrimination, and environmental injustice. I want to express my utmost gratitude towards the community members of Core City for their perseverance while fighting for their community, as well as the BZA for voting unanimously in support of the permit denial. No Detroit community should be used as a sacrifice zone and I will continue to support the Core City community and partners in the efforts to stop this and any future injustice from occurring. As we celebrate this win today, we must continue to support the ongoing advocacy for Core City residents and needed environmental justice everywhere.”
