LANSING, Mich. (Dec.4, 2024) – Today, in a significant step toward equity and justice, the Michigan Senate passed, with bipartisan support, Senate Bill 840, a bill that codifies the Black Leadership Advisory Council (BLAC) as a permanent entity within Michigan’s government. Sponsored by Sen. Erika Geiss (D-Taylor), this landmark legislation solidifies the council’s mission to address systemic inequities, dismantle discrimination, and advance the interests of the Black community across the state by identifying barriers in education, community safety, health, and business leadership.
BLAC will play a vital role in developing, reviewing, and recommending policies and actions to the executive branch aimed at eradicating racial disparities and fostering inclusivity in Michigan. In addition, the council will serve as a key resource for community organizations by providing guidance on issues, programs, and funding opportunities designed to promote economic growth, wealth equity, and social progress within the Black community.
“This legislation is a necessary step in dismantling the structural inequities that have long been embedded in our systems,” said Sen. Geiss. “By codifying BLAC, we are ensuring that Black leaders and community voices have a permanent platform to drive meaningful change, foster economic empowerment, and build a more equitable Michigan.”
The Black Leadership Advisory Council will work alongside state government entities and leaders to tackle the root causes of disparities, ensuring that policies are both effective and inclusive. This collaboration will pave the way for sustainable progress and a brighter future for Michigan’s Black community.
