LANSING, Mich. (Dec. 2, 2025) — Sen. Erika Geiss (D-Taylor) recently introduced a bill package to better protect minors from the growing influence of online gambling and sports betting advertisements. Senate Bills 713–714 would align advertising standards with other age-restricted industries, including alcohol, by creating reasonable limitations on where and how gambling-related advertisements can be marketed.
“The surge of sports betting and online gambling has led to an uptick in marketing campaigns that often glamorize gambling, downplay the dangers, and reach impressionable audiences who are far too young to legally participate,” said Sen. Geiss, lead sponsor of the bill package. “The goal of my legislation is to protect Michigan kids from misleading, coercive online gambling advertisements, ensuring our state’s gambling industry operates with the utmost integrity and accountability.”
Senate Bills 713-714 would empower the Michigan Gaming Control Board to review and approve advertisements and set stronger consequences for violations. This package represents a balanced, commonsense approach rooted in well-established consumer protections and public health standards, promoting safety and responsibility.
This legislation has been referred to the Senate Committee on Regulatory Affairs where it awaits further deliberation.
