Michigan Senate Democrats take action in honor of Black Maternal Health Week

LANSING, Mich. (April 15, 2026) — Sen. Erika Geiss (D-Taylor) recognizes April 11-17, 2026, as Black Maternal Health Week in Michigan. In response, Sen. Geiss has released the following statement:

“Black Maternal Health Week is both a powerful call to action and a moment of reflection. This year’s theme, ‘Rooted in Justice and Joy’, honors the strength and resilience of Black mothers while confronting the oppressive systems that have long harmed us. We must highlight the ongoing legacy of reproductive injustices and health inequities impacting Black birthing people and their families, while also envisioning and advocating for a future grounded in restoration.

“As a state legislator, Black maternal health advocate, and mother, I have seen that while progress has been made in some areas, many inequities have persisted — and in some cases, deepened. Justice demands accountability, systemic change, and a deep respect for Black birthing experiences. Joy, in turn, affirms the importance of rest, healing, cultural connection, and the fundamental right to thrive.

“Together, justice and joy guide us toward a future where Black mothers, families, and communities are supported, protected, and valued.”

This commemorative week, now in its ninth year, was founded by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance (BMMA), and the Michigan Legislature has been recognizing it since its inception in 2018. This year’s theme is ‘Rooted in Justice and Joy’ and honors the power of collective action, shaping a liberated future rooted in justice, healing, and joy.
