LANSING – Sen. Erika Geiss (D-Taylor) issued the following statement today regarding the news of a settlement being reached with Detroit students and their families, who had to sue the State of Michigan under the previous administration just to ensure a right to a reasonable education, including literacy:
“It is abhorrent that this lawsuit had to be filed in the first place, and worse yet that the Snyder and Schuette administrations kept it in court instead of recognizing every student’s constitutional right to literacy. I am immensely thankful to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Attorney General Dana Nessel for showing the former administration and Republicans in the legislature how to work for Black and Brown children’s access to an equitable education.
“Not only does this settlement save taxpayer dollars, it shows the people of Detroit that this administration cares about students, their families, their well-being, and the opportunity for them to succeed and thrive when so many other systemic barriers stand in their way. While this settlement marks the end of the litigation, it is also another step forward and progress toward ensuring more equitable practices in education.”
