LANSING, Mich. (Nov. 18, 2022) — Sen. Erika Geiss (D-Taylor) today issued the following statement upon being named Assistant President Pro Tempore for the 102nd Legislature:

“It is an honor to be named to the leadership team of our new Democratic Senate Majority. As Assistant President Pro Tempore, I look forward to working alongside President Pro Tem Moss and the rest of our caucus in delivering tangible progress for residents across our state that are rooted in equity and justice. There is much work to be done and I’m grateful to be able to tackle Michigan’s most pressing issues every day with this dedicated group of legislators. As the first Afro-Latina and only member of Caribbean descent to hold the gavel in the Senate, and to be able to preside over it with Senator Moss and Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist, it is clear that the entire leadership team looks like Michigan and is reflective of Michigan’s diversity — and diversity is among our strengths.”

“Sen. Geiss’ leadership is going to help our caucus make progress on issues that matter and move them forward during Senate session,” added President Pro Tempore-designate, Sen. Jeremy Moss (D-Southfield). “With our dynamic team of presiding officers in place, we are ready to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives — for the better.”

On Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2022, Michigan Democrats made history by capturing the Senate Majority for the first time since 1983.
