LANSING, Mich. (May 19, 2026) \u2014\u00a0After months of reports detailing the Trump administration\u2019s efforts to <\/span>nationalize\u00a0elections<\/u><\/a><\/span>, <\/span>send military officers to polling locations<\/u><\/a><\/span>, and <\/span>restrict access to mail-in voting<\/u><\/a><\/span>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0the latest blow to election\u00a0integrity\u00a0came earlier this month as the <\/span>U.S. Supreme Court eviscerated key protections of the 1965 Voting Rights Act<\/u><\/a><\/span>.\u00a0But Michigan Senate Democrats are fighting back, <\/span>recently\u00a0reintroducing legislation that would\u00a0establish\u00a0a state-level\u00a0Voting Rights Act<\/u><\/a><\/span>\u00a0to ensure every eligible voter has access to the ballot box.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Today,\u00a0Senate Democrats\u00a0held a press conference with\u00a0Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson<\/b>,\u00a0<\/b>where they broke down the Michigan Voting Rights Act\u00a0(MVRA)\u00a0and outlined their\u00a0plan to counteract these national attacks on\u00a0our elections.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs Washington continues chipping away at fundamental voting protections, it\u2019s up to the states to stand up and\u00a0ensure our elections remain free, fair, and accessible to all eligible voters,\u201d said Sen. Darrin\u00a0Camilleri <\/b>(D-Trenton), lead sponsor of the MVRA. \u201cHere in Michigan,\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0taking that responsibility seriously.\u00a0We’ve\u00a0made registering to vote easier, expanded access to early and mail-in voting, and now, with the Michigan Voting Rights Act,\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0protecting voters from discrimination\u00a0and\u00a0helping ensure every community receives fair representation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The Michigan Voting Rights Act, composed\u00a0of\u00a0Senate Bills 961<\/u><\/a>–964<\/u><\/a>, is\u00a0a comprehensive, pro-democracy package that builds on previous efforts<\/u><\/a>\u00a0to uphold the integrity of the state\u2019s election process, ensuring voters are both physically and legally protected.\u00a0More specifically, this legislation\u00a0would:<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Prohibit voter denial, dilution, and\/or suppression and provide remedies for violations.<\/div>\n
2. Create a nonpartisan and transparent voter institute and database to provide a center for research, training, and information on voting systems and election administration, with easy-to-access information in one location.<\/div>\n
3. Require and expand the jurisdictions that must translate election-related information into languages other than English.<\/div>\n
4. Enhance and clarify protections for voters with disabilities or who otherwise need assistance to vote.<\/div>\n

\u201cAs Secretary of State and Michigan\u2019s chief election officer, I will stand up to anyone who tries to silence your voice or block your vote. But protecting democracy takes all of us. We cannot stand by\u00a0in\u00a0this moment,\u201d said Secretary of State Benson<\/b>. \u201cNow is the time to pass a Voting Rights Act for Michigan to restore the voting protections that the U.S. Supreme Court eviscerated. History proves that when we stand together and refuse to back down, we win.\u00a0Let\u2019s\u00a0show this country who we are, what we stand for, and how we fight back.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

This package was developed with input from Secretary\u00a0Benson<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0numerous\u00a0advocacy organizations that focus on expanding voter accessibility here in Michigan and across the nation, including the Fair Elections Center, NAACP Michigan State Conference, and Brennan Center for Justice.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve made tremendous strides to protect the rights of Michiganders to cast their ballot freely and fairly \u2014 from fending off attempts to overturn our election results in 2020 to implementing early voting and expanding access to mail-in voting,\u201d said Sen. Jeremy Moss<\/strong> (D-Bloomfield), Chair of the Senate Elections Committee. \u201cStill, we face chaos from Washington with a President threatening to intervene in state-run elections and a Supreme Court that gutted the federal Voting Rights Act. Our Senate Majority is stepping up again to ensure voters can participate in our elections without discrimination, intimidation, or any undue burden.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEvery eligible voter should be\u00a0free\u00a0to cast their ballot\u00a0accurately and\u00a0without fear of being turned away at the polls,\u201d said\u00a0Sen. Stephanie\u00a0Chang <\/b>(D-Detroit).\u00a0\u201cIn the aftermath of the\u00a0destruction of the federal\u00a0Voting Rights Act, we must strengthen protections\u00a0here in Michigan for English\u00a0Language Learners\u00a0\u2014\u00a0people who chose to make Michigan their home and have become citizens. Providing resources to make voting more accessible, such as bilingual poll workers\u00a0and\u00a0translated\u00a0ballots, are much-needed steps toward a more representative, participatory\u00a0democracy. 38.9% of Michiganders are English Language Learners, and we must\u00a0ensure their right to vote is upheld\u00a0and strengthened \u2013 not just for these voters, but\u00a0also to uphold the promise of our democracy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAt a moment when voting rights are under increasing attack across this country, Michigan has an opportunity\u00a0\u2014 and a responsibility \u2014 to lead,\u201d said Sen. Erika Geiss <\/b>(D-Taylor).\u00a0\u201cThe MVRA would be a historic civil rights achievement for our state, protecting the access voters have today while also shielding our elections from future efforts to undermine fairness or restrict participation\u00a0\u2014 particularly in historically disenfranchised communities. As other states are moving backward to a pre-1965 era, Senate Democrats are determined to keep Michigan moving forward.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
