Dear Neighbor,

I hope this finds you well! As we go through the many weather changes of a Michigan Spring and prepare for another summer on Lake St. Clair, I wanted to take a moment and share some things happening in Lansing with you.Distracted Driving

I was honored to join with colleagues from across the aisle and across chambers in sponsoring legislation to update our state’s distracted driving laws. Under current law, texting while driving is a ticketable offense, but things like scrolling social media or taking a video are not. This legislation will ensure that Michigan is truly a hands-free state and encourage people to focus on the most important task on the road: driving safely.Budget Update

April is a busy month for Appropriations Committee members, who are voting out their subcommittee recommendations and preparing to meet as a full committee to discuss Michigan’s financial picture for Fiscal Year 2024. On April 25, we voted out budgets for the Departments of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) and State Police (MSP) in the subcommittee I chair. I have enjoyed getting to do a deep dive into the staffing and work done by these two departments, and I was proud to include over $11 million in funding for Selfridge in the DMVA budget.100 Days of Action

Since the 102nd Michigan Legislature began in January, I have been busy working with my colleagues to deliver results for Michiganders. In only 100 Days, we successfully expanded the Working Families Tax Credit, rolled back the unfair retirement tax, restored workers’ rights to negotiate for safer workplaces and fair pay, repealed the state’s outdated 1931 abortion ban, and enacted a slate of gun safety legislation
