MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. (Dec. 3, 2025) — Ahead of the annual 2025 State of Macomb County Address, Sen. Kevin Hertel (D-St. Clair Shores), who represents communities along the shoreline of Lake St. Clair, issued the following statement:
“With a new fighter mission coming to Selfridge, the Chapaton retention basin completed in St. Clair Shores, real progress being made on the county jail project, and state dollars flowing into communities, the future of Macomb is strong and getting stronger. As we head into the new year, I look forward to working with local leaders from both sides to build on this great momentum and continue delivering results in Lansing for the people of Macomb County.”
In the Michigan Senate, Sen. Hertel has been a consistent champion for the county and for communities throughout the region. Major wins of his include securing:
-
$54 million for Selfridge Air National Guard Base to make the infrastructure upgrades necessary to successfully attract a new fighter mission.
-
$40 million for the county jail to modernize its facilities and overhaul its central intake process.
-
Nearly $100 million for critical water infrastructure projects to protect Lake St. Clair and prevent flooding events. Among these investments is $800,000 in the 2026 State Budget for Macomb County to conduct a three-year field trial to test strategies to address the muck growing along the lake’s shoreline.
