Representing Selfridge in the Michigan Senate, Hertel has secured over $60 million for the base and continues to lead on additional investments

LANSING, Mich. (April 21, 2026) — Sen. Kevin Hertel (D-St. Clair Shores) and the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Military, Veterans, State Police (MVSP) passed their budget proposals this morning, hitting their first significant milestone in the budget process. As Chair, Sen. Hertel worked with his Senate colleagues on key budget proposals, including a $152 million investment in Selfridge Air National Guard Base.

“Just as our last several state budgets have included strong support for Selfridge, so too does our latest budget proposal,” said Sen. Hertel, who represents Selfridge in the Michigan Senate. “The base is a tremendous asset to our community, a major driver of our local economy, and a vital pillar of our national defense. That’s why I have — and will always continue — to advocate for the resources needed to secure its future and support the brave men and women who serve there.”

This $152 million investment builds on funding secured by Sen. Hertel in previous budgets to the tune of more than $60 million. These funds helped successfully secure the promise of a new fighter mission composed of 20 F-15 EXs and a KC-46A refueling mission, which requires the base to undertake a multi-million-dollar project to expand and reroute the runway, in addition to making other infrastructure improvements. The resources allocated in the Senate’s budget proposal would secure the final funds needed to finish the project and ensure the timely arrival of their new mission assignments beginning in 2028.

“I’m committed to getting this project done and done the right way,” added Sen. Hertel. “I hope my colleagues in the House will put politics aside, so we can pass this budget on time and deliver the support Selfridge deserves.”
