Sen. Hertel Introduces Bill to Memorialize Fallen Deputy

Bill would rename a section of M-52 ‘Deputy Grant Whitaker Memorial Highway’
LANSING, Mich. — Senator Curtis Hertel Jr. (D–East Lansing) has introduced a bill to rename a portion of State Highway M-52 in memory of Ingham County Deputy Sheriff Grant William Whitaker, who died in the line of duty on December 7, 2014.
“Deputy Whitaker was a model public servant, and was known as an energetic young officer who was always ready to step up when duty called,” Sen. Hertel said.
Introduced on July 12, Senate Bill 509 would rename a portion of Highway M-52 in Stockbridge Township in Ingham County — from the intersection of Highways M-52 and M-106 to the intersection of Highways M-52 and M-36 — as the “Deputy Grant Whitaker Memorial Highway.”
Deputy Whitaker was killed in a car crash while pursuing a driver who was attempting to avoid a traffic stop. During the chase, his patrol car left the roadway and struck a tree, causing him to suffer fatal injuries. The driver of the fleeing vehicle was arrested, convicted of eluding police and driving on a suspended license, and sentenced to prison.
“We have missed Deputy Whitaker every day in our district since this tragedy occurred, and his service and ultimate sacrifice for the residents of Ingham County is worthy of this recognition,” Sen. Hertel said.
The bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Transportation.
